Architecture competition delivers landmark new space in east Belfast

The Royal Society of Ulster Architects (RSUA), JP Corry, and the Department for Communities (DfC) joined forces with EastSide Partnership to launch a temporary pavilion at C.S. Lewis Square called “Built:East”.  The structure – which takes inspiration from the Belfast Truss roof – celebrates the city’s industrial legacy and will provide a year-round public space for outdoor leisure and recreation.

Designed by OGU Architects and Donald McCrory Architects, this project was the winner of the 2017 RSUA / JP Corry Belfast Flare Design Competition aimed at early career architects which challenged entrants to create a “structure of beauty, intrigue and inspiration - a place and space that both locals and visitors will want to experience.”

Commenting on the launch RSUA Director Ciarán Fox said: “Design competitions can help clients realise the creative potential of architecture.  Built:East demonstrates the positive contribution architects make to public spaces and the benefits that design quality brings to our citizens.”

Harry Moore from DfC commented: “I am pleased that the Department has been able to fund this very worthwhile project. The pavilion not only provides a covered event space but it also enhances the local environment. It looks fantastic and I want to commend the young architects who have really brought this area to life through their innovative design.”

Gary Hunter, Regional Director JP Corry said: “JP Corry is proud to support architectural innovation in Northern Ireland and help showcase the creative talents of local architects. This structure uses modern materials to reduce its environmental impact and increase its durability. We’re delighted to have helped realise the ambition of architects to create an exciting new space for everyone to enjoy.”

EastSide Property Chair, James Brown remarked: “We are delighted to see the continued enhancement of the Holywood Arches area in east Belfast. Built:East, located on the Connswater Community Greenway at EastSide Visitor Centre/ C.S. Lewis Square, celebrates the industrial heritage of our past and will provide a landmark space for future events.”
